Two Arrested for Torture and Attempted Murder of 16-Year-Old, Buried Alive
Rwizi Region, June 5, 2024 — In a harrowing incident, the Territorial Police in Rwizi Region and Mbarara CPS have arrested two suspects in connection with the brutal torture and attempted murder of a 16-year-old boy, the victim identified as Amanya Charles.
The suspects, Kamuhanda Evans, 17, and Kamukama Apollo, 43, both from Kaliba cell, Bubaare sub-county, are accused of burying the teenager alive after accusing him of stealing their phones.
This incident began on the morning of May 28, 2024, when the suspects confronted Amanya Charles, a peasant from Kabujye cell, Sheema district. They allegedly tied him to a tree and subjected him to severe torture. Later that night, the suspects dug a shallow grave and buried the young boy, leaving him for dead.
According to the police spokesperson SCP Fred Enanga, Charles managed to crawl out of the shallow grave and sought refuge in a nearby shack, where he remained for two days. On the evening of May 30, 2024, he was discovered and subsequently taken to the police. He has since been transferred to Bubaare Health Centre for medical treatment.
“It is extremely saddening that the victim was held captive, tortured over a missing phone, and buried in a shallow grave by his co-workers. He was fortunate to survive such an ordeal,” said Fred Enanga.
The suspects are now facing charges of torture, conspiracy, and attempted murder. The authorities emphasized the severity of the crime and the legal consequences it entails. “Torture is a punishable crime and can lead to murder. We urge the public to observe the rule of law and avoid such acts of impunity,” the spokesperson added.
Efforts are underway to locate additional suspects who are still at large, ensuring they are brought to justice. The police have urged anyone with information to come forward to aid in the investigation.
This shocking incident has sparked outrage and concern within the community, highlighting the urgent need for stronger measures to prevent such acts of violence. Community leaders and human rights advocates are calling for enhanced protection and awareness to safeguard vulnerable individuals from similar acts of brutality.
