A fatal accident in the early hours of Sunday morning has claimed two lives and left seven others critically injured along the Hoima-Masindi road in Masindi district.
The incident occurred at Kisalizi trading centre when a Fuso tanker, carrying molasses and registered under UAY 410A, collided head-on with a Bajaj motorcycle, registration number UFF 692Y. Eyewitnesses reported that the tanker was traveling from Hoima to Masindi while the motorcycle was heading in the opposite direction.
The deceased have been identified as Matia Levul, the driver of the tanker and a resident of Buliima town council, and Amidu Aganyira, the motorcycle rider from Kisalizi. Both victims died instantly at the scene.
Seven passengers in the tanker sustained critical injuries. Among the identified victims are Amis Mayanja, 40, from Nalenge village in Namutumba district; Robinah Ninsiima, 19, and Shilifah Katusiime, 19, both from Buliima in Masindi district. The identities of the remaining four injured passengers are yet to be confirmed.
Emergency services quickly responded, transporting the injured to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital and Masindi General Hospital for urgent medical care.
Preliminary police investigations attribute the accident to reckless driving by both the tanker driver and the motorcycle rider. The involved vehicles have been towed to Buliima police post for further examination.
Local authorities have expressed their condolences to the families of the deceased and urged all road users to exercise caution to prevent such tragic events.
