Entebbe, Uganda-In a decisive operation, the Crime Intelligence Unit in KMP, in collaboration with the Flying Squad Unit KMP South, successfully apprehended four individuals linked to a taxi criminal gang responsible for the heinous targeting of women in Kajjansi. These women, often commuting early in the morning or late at night, were lured into taxis, subsequently robbed, and brutally murdered.
The intelligence-led operation culminated in the arrest of Abbas Katongole, Ronald Matovu, Herbert Turyashemererwa, and the gang’s ringleader, Isaac Nuwagaba. Nuwagaba, aged 32, was captured in Rwakimuli Cell, Bukinda Sub-county, Rukiga District.
During his arrest, police recovered critical evidence, including several mobile phones, one of which belonged to a victim, Nassali Jenipher, along with other personal items and a substantial amount of cash. Two taxis, registration numbers UAU 737T and UAV 473Y, used in the crimes, were also impounded.
The gang’s violent spree began on March 31, 2024, with the murder of Judith Awori, a 25-year-old waitress whose body was discovered near St. Luke Church in Lweza. Subsequent murders followed a similar pattern: the victims were strangled, suffocated with polythene bags, and their bodies discarded in various locations around Kajjansi.
The community was further shaken on April 23, 2024, when another woman’s body was found burning in a sack in Kawotto Cell. Just days later, on April 29, 2024, Nassali Jenipher was found dead with signs of strangulation, her body discarded in Bweya Cell.
The horror continued on May 9, 2024, with another woman’s body discovered along Jjanja-Lutembe Beach Road. Most recently, on May 15, 2024, Sandra Nangobi went missing after leaving her home early in the morning, her phone switched off and her whereabouts unknown.
Authorities have gathered substantial evidence linking the gang to these crimes, with DNA samples taken from the victims and the suspects’ taxis. The consistent modus operandi indicates a clear pattern aimed at robbery and murder.
The police have issued a stern warning to the public, especially women commuting alone at odd hours, to exercise caution. They advise using taxis from official stages and avoiding those with all-male occupants. The community is urged to travel in groups to reduce vulnerability to such attacks.
The investigation is ongoing, with efforts to track down additional gang members. Authorities commend the coordinated efforts of the Crime Intelligence Unit, Flying Squad Unit KMP South, CID KMP, and the Field Force Unit/General Duties at KMP for their relentless work in this complex case.
The arrests mark a significant step towards restoring safety and justice in Kajjansi, offering a glimmer of hope to a community that has been living in fear. The dedication and collaboration of various law enforcement units demonstrate the effectiveness of joint operations in tackling organized crime and safeguarding citizens.
