Tragic Fire in Wakiso District Claims Lives of Six Children
Wakiso, Uganda – Six children, aged between two and 16 years, perished in a devastating fire early Wednesday morning in Mulanda B, Kisubi parish, Kajjansi town council.
The fire, which engulfed the home of Bakita Ayang, a South Sudanese national, remains under investigation as authorities work to determine its cause.
The fire broke out at approximately 1 a.m., prompting locals to alert the Kisubi police station. Despite their efforts and the eventual arrival of the fire brigade, the flames had already claimed the lives of the six young victims by the time they were contained.
However, two adult women were rescued and are currently receiving treatment at Kisubi Hospital.
Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, described the community’s valiant but ultimately futile attempts to save the children.
“The fire swiftly engulfed the entire house, leaving no opportunity for the neighbors to rescue the victims,” Owoyesigyire stated.
Initial reports suggest the fire may have started from an unattended electronic kettle in the sitting room. The charred remains of the six children were retrieved and taken to Mulago Mortuary for postmortem examinations.
“The scene has been secured, and further investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the fire,” Owoyesigyire added.
“We urge the public to exercise caution with electrical appliances to prevent such tragic incidents,” Owoyesigyire added.
This tragedy adds to a series of devastating home fires in the Kampala metropolitan area over recent years, which have resulted in the loss of entire families. Incidents in areas such as Kasanga, Bukasa, Ndeeba, Nakulabye, Kasangati, Katwe, Makindye, and Luzira highlight the persistent risk of residential fires.
The ongoing issue underscores the critical need for heightened fire safety awareness and preventive measures to protect vulnerable communities.
