Viral TikTok Boast Lands Two Ugandan Youth in Jail for Alleged Phone Theft Scheme
Kampala, Uganda – The quest for social media fame took a dark turn for two youths on Tuesday after a TikTok video they posted led to their arrest.
The video, which showed the pair bragging about their ability to crack the codes of stolen smartphones and laptops, quickly went viral and sparked widespread outrage among Ugandans, many of whom have fallen victim to phone thefts, especially during traffic jams.
The suspects boasted about how easily they could unlock stolen iPhones and Android devices before selling them to unsuspecting buyers.
The videoβs popularity prompted the Kampala Metropolitan Police to launch a swift manhunt, resulting in the teens’ arrest by Tuesday afternoon. They are currently detained at the Central Police Station in Kampala.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Mr. Patrick Onyango stated that during interrogation, the two admitted to making the video but claimed their intention was merely to gain social media followers.
The incident has raised significant concerns about the lengths to which individuals will go to achieve online fame, highlighting the darker side of the quest for digital fame.
