700 Foot Pilgrims Embark on Namugongo Journey from Nebbi Cathedral Parish
Nebbi District, Uganda – A stirring spectacle unfolded yesterday as more than 700 foot pilgrims set off from Namrwodho Nebbi Cathedral Parish on their pilgrimage to Namugongo.
Father Emmanuel Ocokuru, spokesperson for the Organizing Committee of Nebbi Diocese, revealed that the Archbishop-elect of Gulu Archdiocese, Raphael Okorach, will flag off the pilgrims from Nebbi in the morning.
Father Ocokuru emphasized the safety measures in place for the pilgrims, disclosing that their first stop will be Packwach Town, followed by transportation to Karuma the next day to avoid encounters with wild animals in Murchison Falls National Park.
“We have approximately 700 pilgrims, with around 400 departing from Nebbi and others joining from Pakwach. MTN has generously provided reflector jackets for the pilgrims, and additional support has been offered by individual donors,” Mr. Ocokuru stated.
Lawrence Songa, Member of Parliament for Ora County, Zombo District, expressed solidarity with the pilgrims, urging communities along the route to offer their support for a safe journey to Kampala and back.
The pilgrims are undertaking a challenging trek of approximately 272 kilometers to reach Namugongo Shrine in Wakiso District for the annual Martyrs’ Day celebrations on June 3rd.
This year, the Nebbi Catholic Diocese has been entrusted with leading the National Martyrs’ Day celebrations at the Namugongo Catholic Shrine, marking a significant milestone for the diocese and underscoring the enduring spirit of faith and devotion among believers across Uganda.
