Kampala, Uganda – Police have arrested a man caught on cctv camera in a video attempting to rob a local businessman in Nateete, a suburb of Kampala.
The suspect, identified as Kiiza Ashraf, was arrested on Wednesday evening, May 15, 2024, in Kyotera District after fleeing the scene.
Kiiza, an employee at Bashir Grain Millers, is currently held at Nateete Police Station. He faces charges of attempted murder, as confirmed by ASP Luke Owoyesigire, the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson.
The suspect’s file is under review by the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) and he is expected to appear in court soon.
“We tracked the suspect through our intelligence services, and he is now in custody,” stated ASP Owoyesigire.
“Kiiza’s motive was purely to rob money from his client, but his attempt was unsuccessful”, added ASP Owoyesigire.
The incident occurred on the evening of May 14, 2024, when Kiiza attacked Sam Turyamuhaki at around 8 p.m. Armed with a machete and a hammer, Kiiza walked into the cash office where Turyamuhaki was counting money.
The viral video shows Kiiza placing a sack on a chair before pulling out the machete and demanding the money. Turyamuhaki tried to defend himself but was overpowered and sustained head injuries.
Bystanders temporarily subdued Kiiza, but he managed to escape until his arrest the following day. The case has sparked widespread concern and discussion about safety in the Nateete area, leading to calls for heightened security measures for local businesses.
