Ntungamo Police Investigate After Officer’s Fingers Severed by Suspect While Resisting Arrest
Ntungamo, Uganda – The Ntungamo police are delving into the harrowing incident in which the officer in charge of Rwashamaire Police Station, Mr. Rogers Wamono, lost two fingers. The officer was injured by a suspect wielding a machete during an attempted arrest related to a domestic altercation.
The violent episode unfolded in Kiyaga village, Nkongoro parish, Nyabihoko Sub County, where Mr. Wamono and his team were responding to a call about a suspect who had allegedly attacked his friend over a love affair dispute at a local bar. The confrontation escalated, prompting police intervention.
As Mr. Wamono and his colleagues breached the suspect’s hiding place, the suspect hurled a machete, resulting in Mr. Wamono sustaining severe injuries.
“The suspect quarrelled at a bar with a friend over a love affair and attacked him with a machete. When the fight intensified, we were called in. On rushing to the scene, the suspect fled and hid in a house. We managed to access the house, and I instructed my men not to shoot. During the arrest attempt, he flung the machete at us, causing my injuries,” Mr. Wamono recounted from Mulago Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.
Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that the suspect had already injured two others with the same machete before retreating to his house.
“He was uncontrollable, so we called the police. When they arrived and broke into the house, he cut the officer’s fingers,” said Mr. Mwesigwa Joseph, a resident.
The attack resulted in Mr. Wamono’s ring finger being completely severed and his pinkie barely hanging by tissue, with additional injuries to other fingers.
Ntungamo District Police Commander, Mr. Hannington Bushaija, confirmed that the 35-year-old suspect is in custody as the investigation continues.
“We are fortunate our officers remained composed and successfully arrested the suspect without further violence. We are conducting a thorough investigation, including assessing the suspect’s mental state,” Mr. Bushaija stated.
Mr. Wamono was initially treated at Devine Clinic Rwashamaire before being transferred to Mulago National Referral Hospital for specialized care.
This incident underscores the problems faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty and has prompted discussions on the need for improved protective measures and mental health assessments for suspects in such volatile situations.
